BASICS FOR HOUSING SECTION 8, FUNDING & APARTMENTS
Each apartment building on the following list has some apartments funded through Section 8 or through other types of funding sources. For instance, a building that has 30 apartments may only have 15 that are subsidized. The other 15 apartments are at the regular rental fee.
To apply for a subsidized apartment, call the manager of the desired building and request an application. After the application is completed and mailed to the manager, they can determine what your rent will be according to your income.
It is important to remember that each apartment building operates separately from the others, so you must call the manager of the apartment building you are interested in to start the process of applying.
Applications are available at the Community Action Partnership office at 214 Main Street, Kalispell (758-5437). When your application is completed, send it to the address in Helena.
When your eligibility is determined, your name is put on a waiting list, which is about three years.
Once you are notified that you are at the top of the list, bring to the Community Action Partnership office:
Verification of income;
Social Security card;
Medical bill receipts;
and Any other pertinent information requested.
At this point, you can look for a rental that fits within the guidelines. The landlord must agree to rent under Section 8. An inspection of the rental is done and then lease papers can be signed.
Community Action Partnership does not help locate housing, only aids in the subsidizing of a rental property.
If you are 62 years or older and rent, you are entitled to file for a partial refund from the state if:
Your household income does not exceed $45,000, and;
You have lived in the state of Montana for at least 9 months of the tax year.
To file, you need:
1) Proof of rent paid during the year – rent receipts signed by the landlord.
2) Proof of income (from all sources, such as pensions, Social Security, dividends, interest, tax refunds, etc.)
Form 2EC, entitled “2011 Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit” is available at the IRS office, the library, and the Agency on Aging office.
